How to Stop or Control Hirsutism
Hirsuitism refers to the abnormal growth of hairs in women. This can either be the development of dark and coarse hairs in areas where women have fine hairs or in the areas where they have no hairs at all. These regions include the upper lip, chin, chest, abdomen, back, etc.
Please note that women with any sort of issue with hair growth including excess hair growth or abnormal distribution of hairs should consult a doctor and not rely on self medication or remedies at all as it can be due to any underlying hormonal or other issue that needs to be diagnosed and treated.
Causes of hirsuitism
Hirsuitism is caused by access production and action of androgens. Androgens are hormones secreated by adrenal glands and the ovaries.
There are several conditions that can lead to hirsuitism, the most common ones are:
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Idiopathis hirsuitism
Treatment of hirsuitism
Remember that any abnormal or excess hair growth in women has to be discussed with an expert specialist and should be diagnosed so that the proper management can be started.
If there’s just mildly abnormal hair growth in women, it can sometimes be a matter of choice only too. The normal pattern is highly variable among different ethnicities.
Some of the treatment options to stop or control hirsuitism in women include:
- Hair removal
- shaving
- electrolysis
- chemical hair removal
- waxing
- laser hair removal
- creams to remove hairs or slow down the growth of unwanted hairs in women
- Hair lightening
- bleaching
- Weight loss (results in reduction in androgens levels in women and thus reduction in hirsuitism)
- medications (not recommended without experts advise)
- birth control pills
- anti-androgens (including spironolactone, finasteride, etc.)
Remember not to jump to conclusions yourself and never to start using any medicine and always get yourself diagnosed by a expert and discuss the treatment options best for you.
