What are self replicating organelles?

Self replicating organelles are those organelles of a cell which can divide themselves and create copies of themselves.

The main two self replicating organelles are:

  • Mitochondria
  • Plastids (in plants)

Are Peroxisomes self replicating organelles of cell?

Peroxisomes are also included by some biologists in the list of self replicating organelles, however they do not have any genetic material (they lack DNA) and thus it’s not a clear cut member of self replicating organelles.

Why are mitochondria self replicating organelles?

Mitochondria has its own genetic material. It has the required genetic code to create proteins that are required for its replication and division, thus it’s called self replicating organelle of the cell.

Is Nucleus self replicating organelle of cell?

No. Nucleus is not considered self replicating organelle.

Nucleus does replicate, however during cell division, it dissolves and then is reformed. Thus it’s not replicated, it’s destroyed and then reformed.

Are plastids self replicating?

Yes. Plastids are self replicating organelles.

Plastids are any class of small organelles inside a cell’s cytoplasm in plants, which contains pigment or food in it.
